WASHINGTON—China is the target of a growing number of lawsuits filed in U.S. federal courts over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, with businesses, individuals and now a state government seeking to hold Beijing liable for deaths and financial damages.
Missouri this week became the first state to file suit, alleging that China misled the world about how easily the virus can spread, silenced doctors who tried to sound the alarm, failed to respond adequately to the threat and then hoarded crucial medical supplies.
